College Facilities
Butler is proud to offer modern, accessible, and inclusive facilities to support both academic life and college community events.
The Mound
Fun fact - we own the mound. What first was a place where excavated dirt was placed is now its own little ecosystem, which you can climb to the top of and see Durham Cathedral!
Accommodation Blocks
We have four accommodation blocks, named after places of importance to Josephine Butler:
- Kirknewton
- Dilston
- Milfield
- Wooler
Undergraduate freshers are usually allocated to Dilston, Milfield, or Wooler, whilst postgraduates and returners are allocated to Kirknewton and Dilston.
All rooms are en-suite and share a kitchen with 5 other people.
JBs (The Bar)
JBs is the largest college bar in Durham.
Open:
- 7pm-11pm (Sun-Thu)
- 7pm-12am (Fri-Sat)
It serves food (until 9:30pm) and drinks including:
- The Suffragist
- The Butler Bomb
- The Reformer
- The Butler Sunrise
It also hosts events, formals after-parties, and study space during the day.
The JCR / MCR Lounge
The lounges include sofas, board games, a TV with games consoles, and more. Used for society meetings and casual socialising.
Library Lounge
A quiet study space with:
- Sofas and beanbags
- Computers
- Printer access
Sometimes used for Tea and Toast welfare events.
Dance Studio
Used by dance and cheer teams, but also bookable for personal use.
Group Study
Collaborative space with large table, computers, and presentation screen.
Quiet Study
Silent study space with desks and PCs.
JB's Lawn
Outdoor social space used for events like Butler Day.
Howlands Hall
Large shared hall used for sports, events, and formals.
Seminar Room / Old Shop
Bookable rooms for societies and committees.
Quiet Room
Used for welfare drop-ins and chaplaincy.
Music Room
Equipped with piano, drum kit, and stands for rehearsals.
Gym
Shared gym with weights, treadmills, and bikes.
GBP 45 annual membership for JCR members.
Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA)
Used for netball and tennis, and bookable for casual use.
The Allotment
Run by the Allotment Society, growing vegetables and maintaining the space.
Milfield Field
Multi-purpose sports field used by college teams.
Laundry Room
Shared laundry facility. Washes from GBP 4.40, drying is free.
Saltwell Building
Shared building used for talks and events.
